What the experience is

It is a 360-degree multimedia show that uses huge projections, spatial sound and archive material to place visitors inside Bowie’s work and creative mind.

Instead of glass cases or static displays, the venue projects film, photography, drawings, lyrics and performance footage across the walls and ceiling, creating a fully immersive environment.

The show has been created with the David Bowie Estate and is written and directed by Mark Grimmer, who previously worked on the well-known David Bowie Is exhibition.

What you will see and hear

The experience combines iconic moments from across Bowie’s career with rarely seen material, including:

  • Reconstructed “holy grail” footage of Bowie performing “Heroes” at Earl’s Court in 1978

  • Performances spanning Space Oddity, Diamond Dogs, and later eras

  • Rare interviews, personal notes and archive audio used as narration

  • Visual chapters exploring creativity, theatre, spirituality and transformation

The aim is not just to celebrate famous personas like Ziggy Stardust, but to explore the person behind the characters and his creative process.

How the show works

  • The presentation runs as a looping immersive film rather than a stage performance.

  • Audio has been specially remixed for Lightroom’s spatial sound system, so music moves around the room.

  • The experience is roughly an hour long and designed so visitors feel “inside” the visuals and music.

Where it takes place

Lightroom is a purpose-built immersive venue near Coal Drops Yard at King’s Cross, created specifically for large-scale artist-led shows using projection and sound technology.

In simple terms

Think of it as:

  • Not a concert

  • Not a traditional museum exhibition

  • More like a cinematic, surround-sound Bowie experience that tells his story through music, visuals and archive material.
